Nov. 19, 1970 – SAGLE NEWS by Pat Hines

Because they got skunked on their October hunting trip, Marvin Hines, Chet Craig, and Carl and Ron Moyle decided to try for their elk on a weekend. Success this time - on Saturday they got a bull. They went back Sunday to bring it out and before leaving, brought down a cow, which meant a return the next day. Marvin didn’t take his rifle, but instead, his pistol.

When they began unloading, Marv was on the passenger side and as he leaned into the truck to pick up his axe, the pistol slipped free and struck the truck’s running board, causing it to fire. The unexpected crash of that shot froze everyone in their tracks until they saw Marv jump back, clutching his right arm. You can imagine what they expected to find as they raced to his side, but what they actually did see was a very surprised, and mildly swearing Marv without a scratch on him.

The bullet left an 8-inch tear in his coat from elbow to shoulder, neatly split the inside door handle, put a hole in the sun visor, then embedded itself in the roof of the cab. Amazing as it sounds, the only damage was to Chet’s truck, Marv’s coat and everyone’s nerves. There was not a mark on the shirt Marv wore under the jacket nor on his arm. What caused him to jump, he said, was the heat of the bullet as it passed along his arm.

In all the years of hunting, nothing like this has happened before and may it never again. Needless to say, I am delighted it is only a torn coat, and not irreparable damage to a very nice husband.

Nov. 19, 1920 – PRESENTATION OF MEDALS

Probate Judge Guy Martin, presenting medals on Armistice day, paid a glowing tribute to our boys who served in the army, navy and marine corps. The awarding of medals to each man as his name was called stirred the memory of soldier and civilian alike. It is to be regretted that the war department branch issuing the medals was so swamped that the local post did not receive their entire allotment. Those who were missed will no doubt receive their decorations later.

THIS IS CLEANUP WEEK

Beginning tomorrow, through the influence of the Chamber of Commerce, the Civic club and the city beautification committee, Sandpoint will have a cleanup week and it is expected that every resident of the city will do his part to rid the city of weeds and rubbish, in order that we may start in next spring without hindrance to prosecute an effective “city beautiful” campaign. The city will be divided into districts of four blocks each, with a lieutenant in charge of the work in each block.
