Oct. 6, 1970 – PROUDLY WE SALUTE

Sgt. Craig Lewis was one of six men in the 25th Avn. Co. to receive the Army Commendation Medal for exceptionally meritorious service in support of military operations against communist aggression in the Republic of Vietnam. Sgt. Lewis left for Vietnam Oct. 10, 1969 and is stationed at Ben Hoa Air Base, 12 miles northeast of Saigon.

Spec. 4, Ronald L. Hernvall, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Hernvall, Nordman, Ida., received the Army commendation medal in Vietnam, for heroism in action while engaged in military operations against a hostile force in Vietnam. A rifleman in Company D, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry of the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), Spec. 4 Hernvall entered the Army in September, 1969.

RUBELLA IMMUNIZATIONS BEING HELD

Parents of all Bonner County children ages one through 12, are reminded that immunizations for Rubella, commonly called German Measles, will be given Thursday and Friday. The vaccine, available only since June 1969, is the only effective method for protecting expectant women, said Iva Burnstad, coordinator of the Rub Out Rubella campaign.

BANDELIN TO EMCEE ANDRUS DINNER

Local attorney Glenn Bandelin will emcee the Andrus fund raising dinner tonight at the Travlers. Proceeds from the $7.50 per plate dinner will be contributed to the Andrus for Governor campaign.

Oct. 6, 1920 – BOOTBLACK TURNED LOOSE

James Lisbon, the colored bootblack arrested on complaint of Alderman Swenson that he threatened Swenson with an axe after an altercation about a pair of shoes Mr. Swenson had left to be shined, was turned loose Monday when the Justice of the Peace dismissed the case for lack of evidence. Myron Whittemore and Sam Turner, who were in the shining parlor at the time, testified that Lisbon did not “rush” Swenson with an axe or otherwise threaten damage to his person, stating the only instrument in his hands at the time of the alleged threat was an implement of his profession and he made no threats with it.

Dr. A.J. DuFrene, deputy state veterinarian, went to Cabinet to inspect a trainload of several thousand head of sheep being sent there by interests in Pasco, Wash., for fall grazing.

Members of the Methodist church held a reception at the church in honor of the new pastor, Rev. T.H. Fertig, who recently arrived in Sandpoint to fill the vacancy caused by the leave of absence granted Rev. W.N. Byars so he might complete his university work.
