The Senior Softball USA World Championships were held in St. George, Utah, recently and the North Idaho Softball Club claimed the title in the men's 65-70 AAA division with a perfect 7-0 record.

John Walkington, a long-time resident of Sandpoint who now lives in Bonners Ferry, was a member of the squad and was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament for the North Idaho team.

Top teams from around the U.S. competed in the three-day tourney.

North Idaho knocked off the national champions in the quarterfinals and then defeated Team Texas 17-10 in the title game.

Six players from the squad were named to the all-tournament team.

Walkington was also a member of the North Idaho team that won the world championship in 2008.

Five of the players on the team are local players, five are from Montana and three hail from North Dakota.
