Bullpup cross country wraps up season with districts

COEUR d'ALENE — The Sandpoint Middle School cross country team competed in districts on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at Ramsey Park.

The 2.5K race was split into a JV/varsity format. The Bullpups competed alongside CDA Charter, Woodland, River City, Post Falls, Lakes and Canfield.

The varsity girls captured second finishing 46 points behind CDA Charter. Hannah Stiller ran a steady and fast tempo to be the first Bullpup runner to cross the finish line in ninth.

Mackenzie Mitchell (12th) and Silvi Landrum (13th) packed up to run personal bests. Hot on their heels was Noah Roark in 16th and Reese Burnett in 18th. Piper Roark secured 31st and Izzy Davidson was 34th. Six of the seven runners for the Bullpups are seventh graders and they will look to build off their success this season next fall.

The varsity boys placed third and finished five points behind runner-up CDA Charter and 43 behind first-place Canfield.

Callahan Waters, a seventh grader, continued leading the Bullpups and ran a smart race to secure third. Fletcher Barrett was next in 12th, Tyler Engelson took 13th, Taylor Roche placed 15th, Lane Gavin captured 26th and Travis Morgan secured 28th. All five of those runners ran personal bests.

SMS was second in the JV girls race. The Bullpups were nine points behind first-place CDA Charter. Gracie Gavin ran the best race of her career to place fourth overall. Taylor Hines (fifth) and Maddison Hall (sixth) were right on Gavin's heels to make a nice front pack. Hannah Fisher (15th) and Mallory Pierce (16th) ran personal bests to be the team's last two scoring runners.

The next pack in was Videaliah Evans (18th), Hannah Ricks (19th), Maicy Wittmann (20th) and Emma Darrin (21st). Isabella Bostock (27th), Emily Brazill (36th), Piper Thompson (49th) and Jozy Keister (50th) rounded out the Bullpups that competed.

The Bullpups' JV boys secured third place behind Canfield and CDA Charter. Braelyn Tallent ran a smart race to take second place. He edged out the runner in third by two tenths of a second.

Oliver Porietis came in 14th, Evan Brubaker was 17th, Porter Nelson captured 18th and Josh Yunek locked down 19th. Matthew Bryan (25th), Kale Wright (32nd), Joaquin Laboy (54th), Rafael Laboy (56th), James Sturgeon (68th) and Emmett Lowman (69th) also raced in the meet.

A week earlier on Oct. 14, the Bullpups took part in a 1.5 mile race at Woodland Middle School. Just like districts, the top seven on the boys and girls side took part in the varsity race while the rest of the team competed in the JV.

The girls won the varsity race over CDA Charter while the boys took second to Canfield.

In the girls race, SMS secured six of the top 14 spots on the way to victory.

Reese Burnett led the way in seventh and Silvi Landrum finished right behind her in eighth. Hannah Stiller (10th), Noah Roark (11th), Mackenzie Mitchell (12th) and Piper Roark (14th) packed up together. All six runners were ahead of CDA Charter's fourth runner helping the Bullpups secure the win.

Izzy Davidson had a crucial performance finishing 27th.

Callahan Waters captured third with a PR of 8:15 in the boys varsity race to lead the Bullpups. The pack of Fletcher Barrett, Taylor Roche and Tyler Engelson followed in 12th, 13th and 15th respectively. Lane Gavin finished 25th, Travis Morgan placed 30th and Aaron Betz took 40th.

The Bullpups claimed the girls JV race. Taylor Hines placed first with a time of 10:59. She was 26 seconds ahead of the next runner. Maddison Hall had a solid performance capturing third. Gracie Gavin (ninth) and Emma Darrin (10th) packed up and Alyssa Fite powered through a minor injury to take 14th. She was the last scoring runner for the team. Videaliah Evans (19th), Maicy Wittmann (20th), Hannah Ricks (25th), Mallory Pierce (28th), Isabella Bostock (37th), Emily Brazill (44th) and April Davis (48th) also competed for the Bullpups.

SMS secured fourth in the boys JV race. Braelyn Tallent was the lead dog for this group placing fifth with a 10:22. Oliver Porietis (eighth), Porter Nelson (26th), Evan Brubaker (29th) and Kale Wright (37th) rounded out the scoring runners for the Bullpups. Rafael Laboy (51st), Joaquin Laboy (57th), Emmett Lowman (59th), and James Sturgeon (69th) also took part in the meet.
