Spartans make state date

For a running team on a rainy night, Priest River showed it can live by the pass as well.

The Spartans (3-1 in Intermountain League play, 7-1 overall) locked up its first trip to the state playoffs with a 27-6 win over Bonners Ferry. Priest River will go into the playoffs as the second seed, due to the team’s loss 37-0 to Lakeland two weeks ago. The Spartans will play Weiser on the road Nov. 4.

30 Years Ago — 1990

No heat, no school

Lamanna High School students got a couple of unscheduled days off Monday after a brief Avista power outage Sunday triggered a problem with the heating system at the school. Although the heat was back on by Tuesday morning, Board clerk Donna Morrow said the temperature in the central wing had not risen enough to make it feasible to hold classes.

40 Years Ago — 1980

Bear raids honey

Last week an uninvited guest tore into three bee hives a couple had set up on their property at Snug Harbor along the Pend Oreille River. The visitor turned out to be a 175-pound, three-or-four-year old bear, according to the game warden. On the 4th morning the bear was trapped and relocated to the headwaters of the Coeur d’ Alene River “where there are no bee hives.”

Letterman’s Club plans wild game feed

A wild game smorgasbord sponsored by the high school Letterman’s Club will be served between 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at King’s Bar and Café. According to Coach Balison, elk and moose meat will be featured on the menu.

60 Years Ago — 1960

Specialties featured in Italian Dinner

An Italian Specialties dinner, served buffet style by St. Catherine of Siena’s Altar Society Oct. 30, promises to be one of the highlights of the fall season. The menu consists of such Italian specialties as Ravioli, Chicken Cacciatori, meat balls, Lasagna, Polenta, pizza, Zucchini Casserole, Cici beans, tossed green salad with Italian dressing, hard rolls, garlic bread, scolidas, tordidi, biscotti and anise cookies. It will be held in the church basement from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., $1.50 for adults and 75 cents for children under 12.

Church briefs

The plastering of the main auditorium of the Free Methodist church has been completed. The congregation is looking forward to the time when they will be able to hold their services upstairs.

Renovating the basement of the Congregational church has been under way by teams of members and friends of the church, headed by board members.

80 Years Ago — 1940

Passes the preliminary exam

Russell G. Stewart, who resides on the Peninsula, was successful in passing the preliminary examination for the Marine Corps.

90 Years Ago — 1930

Meets new pastor

About 18 of the young people gathered at the Free Methodist parsonage to gain the acquaintance of the new pastor, Rev. L. W. Hawley and his wife.

100 Years Ago — 1920

“Skipper” a visitor W. J. Geary, “skipper” of the Newport Ferry, was a visitor to our city on Monday. Bill is always a welcome visitor, as he carries the smile that won’t come off.
