Students at Sandpoint High School have been all week applying to colleges and universities through the Apply Idaho program.

School councilors and English teachers partnered up at the beginning of the week to help students fill out applications for various colleges and universities.

In the state of Idaho, students have no application fees for in-state schools, however, students are also given help with out-of-state schools as long as they pay their own application fees.

The program also allows students to pursue associate degrees and certificates, not just apply to four-year universities said Jeralyn Mire, a post-secondary transition counselor at SHS.

“I’m so excited the state of Idaho recognizes the importance of students having a post-secondary plan,” she said, “and to help with this statewide initiative to remove application fees.”

Sarah Miles, an English teacher at SHS, said she’s grateful for the chance to help students.

“Apply Idaho is a great opportunity for students to create options for themselves after they graduate and to see that creating those options is easy,” she wrote in an email. “It can be stressful for students to think about the future, but being able to do it together in our English class gives them access to adults who are encouraging and knowledgeable.”

The program will continue through Friday, and more information about Apply Idaho can be found at apply.nextsteps.idaho.gov.
