Is this really the best we can do?

I recently was denied the ability to check out any materials from the Sandpoint library because of "face mask abuse."

Let me explain. I'm 78, retired, and use the library almost daily. I'm diagnosed having a lung disorder: COPD. Wearing a mask causes me to hyperventilate, thereby forcing me to breathe in dangerous carbon dioxide.  My library troubles began one day as I was perusing the video stacks. Seemingly out of nowhere, "The Enforcer" appeared. He informed me that I wasn't wearing my face mask properly. I explained about the COPD and admitted to slipping my mask below my nose so I could breathe easier. No matter.  I was further informed that if I did not comply with proper mask-wearing, the police would be summoned and they would charge me with trespassing. Say what? After picking myself up off the floor, I adjusted my mask and went about looking for videos.

In addition to having COPD, I'm diabetic. As a result my eyesight isn't what it used to be.

This comes to play when I trade in my mask for one of those clear, full-face shields. I quickly discovered that it was difficult to read the titles to the videos through the shield. Nor could I make out detail on the computer screen upstairs where I get my email.

I was using a computer, the closest patron was 12 feet away. I had lifted my shield just enough to be able to see the screen in front of me. Within five minutes — you guessed it - the enforcer showed up. It all came to a head when I was subsequently denied service, my library card invalidated.

As a landowner in Bonner County for over 40 years I have sent thousands in tax dollars to the library district. Is this really the best we can do?
