Spartan girls take fifth, boys sixth in home invitational

PRIEST RIVER — The Spartans hosted the 24th annual Priest River Invitational on Saturday and there were plenty of impressive performances despite the soggy conditions.
A total of 12 teams and 380 athletes submerged on Priest River for the meet. Head coach Jared Hughes said they had just under 1,000 entries for the event. It's the most he's seen during his time with the program.
The Spartan girls captured fifth while the boys placed sixth as a team.
Priest River was unable to grab any individual titles at the meet, but medaled in a number of events.
Shane Gamber posted a personal best in the boys 300 hurdles to claim second in the event. He also ran a leg on the 4x400 relay team that took second. Caleb McDermeit, Jimmie Isenberger and Dylan Lord were on the relay as well.
Lord and McDermeit, along with Aidan Troumbley and Ethan Korff, helped Priest River secure second in the sprint medley. In the 4x100 relay, Erik Deem, Joey Hayes, Matyus McLain and Troumbley placed third out of six teams.
Deem earned third in pole vault and Isenberger was third in the 400. In the shot put, Levi Hanna captured fifth, Jace Yount took seventh and McLain tied for eighth. McLain was also eighth in the discus.
On the girls side, Allyson Barton tossed a PR in the discus to place second and she grabbed third in the triple jump. Barton also ran legs on the 4x100 and sprint medley relay teams that each took third.
Annika Rantala was on both relays as well and she took second in the 1600 and fourth in the 3200, running season bests in both.
Erika Swoboda, who ran a leg in the sprint medley, captured third in the high jump. Elisheva Davis, who participated in the 4x100, was fifth in the long jump, seventh in the 200 and 10th in the 100.
Allyson Dickinson placed sixth in the 400, eighth in the 100 and 10th in the 200. She was also on the 4x100.
Last Wednesday, the Spartans hosted a pair of Intermountain League duals against Kellogg and Coeur d'Alene. Despite only having 18 athletes, the boys and girls both took down the Wildcats and Panthers to finish the year with a 2-2 record in league duals.
Hughes said that's the best IML record for the girls since 2014.
Priest River heads to the Timberlake Invitational at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
"We only have three weeks until districts, so we will be training through this week and next to hopefully peak at districts," Hughes said.
