Fall sports season starts today

| August 20, 2021 1:00 AM

Finally, it's here — day one of the fall sports season.

The Sandpoint boys and girls soccer teams will kick-off their seasons today.

The boys host Lake City at 6 p.m. at War Memorial Field while the girls will travel to Lake City for a 4:30 p.m. match. For full season previews on both teams, read today's 2021 Fall Sports Preview.

This year, the combined 5A-4A Inland Empire League is back for seven sports — boys soccer, girls soccer, volleyball, boys basketball, girls basketball, baseball and softball.

The 4A IEL teams will continue to play two regular season league games (four for baseball and softball) against each other. However, they will also play one league game (two in baseball and softball) against the 5A IEL schools, according to Lake City Athletic Director Jim Winger.

For this year, all games hosted by 4A IEL schools against 5A IEL teams in boys soccer, volleyball, boys basketball and baseball will be considered league games. In girls soccer, girls basketball and softball, all contests hosted by 5A IEL schools against 4A IEL teams are league games.

So both soccer games for the Bulldogs on Friday will count as league games.
