Snow brings joy, grief

Priest River youngsters used the snow-covered slope at City Park as a miniature ski hill after last week’s winter storms. Snow fell every day since last Monday, causing as much difficulty for drivers as it created a fun spot for many of the city’s children. More snow fell this week and forecasts call for more snow for at least the next week.

Calculator grant received

Priest River Elementary School’s Sue Seaman has done it again. This time her grant-writing skills have resulted in an award of $1,002 from GTE for the Calculator Use Project at her school.

40 Years Ago — 1981

Local girl qualifies

1st Lt. Mary Collins of the 82nd Airborne Group out of Fort Bragg, N.C., recently made the final parachute jump that gave her wings and made her a qualified paratrooper. Mary graduated from Priest River High School in 1973.

50 Years Ago — 1971

Pioneer storekeeper dies

Memorial services for Leonard E. Paul, who died Nov. 23 at Newport Community Hospital, were held Nov. 26 in Newport. Mr. Paul was born Aug. 30, 1888, in Neenah, Wisc., and came to the Priest Lake area in 1906. In that year he founded the store bearing his name on a bank overlooking Priest Lake, adjoining the cluster of buildings called Williams at the southern end of the lake.

Post office offers instructions

“The rate for unsealed greeting cards, which may contain no writing other than your name, is three cents again this year. Remember, cards mailed at this rate are not forwarded to a new address if your relative or friend has moved, nor are they returned to you if undeliverable. If you write a message on them, they require 4-cent stamps whether sealed or unsealed.”

Mean thief in town

A milk bottle, practically filled with donations for the school milk fund, was stolen from the Kings Hotel tavern.

80 Years Ago — 1941

Old-timer promoted education

Chas. L. Mears was stricken Monday night and died in the Priest River Hospital Tuesday morning. Mears owned his ranch here many years and was a great favorite with young and old. He served on the school board for many years, and donated the land on which the school house stands.

Rescuing logs

The driving crew under Louis Whetsler left this week to get logs that were frozen in at the mouth of Pack River.

From Camp One

Five mornings of every week we see the school ma’m get into a sled, five or six youngsters pile in with her and they are off to school — that is one way to have good attendance.
