Kellogg rolls past Lady Cats

CLARK FORK — Clark Fork girls basketball suffered a loss to a 3A school on its home court for the second straight night.

The 4-1 Kellogg Wildcats handed the Lady Cats a 54-24 defeat on Thursday. Clark Fork opened its season Wednesday with a hard-fought loss to 3A Priest River.

"Our hustle was there," head coach Jordan Adams said, "but our bodies were just a little bit slower than our minds, probably because they're a little fatigued from [Wednesday] night."

The Lady Cats trailed 21-3 after one quarter and 32-7 at the half, but they hung with the Wildcats in the final 16 minutes and were only outscored 22-17.

"In the third and fourth quarter, they came out and they picked it up, and played much better," Adams said.

Sophomore Lilly Reuter led the team with 6 points on a pair of 3-pointers, senior Katelyn Matteson scored 5, senior Grace Yancey and sophomore Eloise Shelton each had 4, freshman Hannah Thompson tallied 3 and junior Paige Valliere added 2.

Adams said she continues to be impressed by the play of Thompson. In her first two games on varsity, the freshman has shown she isn't intimidated at all by the bigger stage. Thompson buried a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter.

"She just has so much hustle," Adams said. "She only played one quarter ... but when she does something the whole team is so supportive that it just brings everybody to life."

Speaking of life, Shelton always seems to be the life of the party on the court, and she was Thursday. In a game where the Lady Cats were facing an uphill battle against a much larger school, Adams said Shelton kept the energy up with her exuberant personality.

"Eloise Shelton is always right there," she said. "She's always in a good mood."

Clark Fork (0-2) travels to Genesis Prep at 6 p.m. Friday.

"They ended the game really strong so I'm actually pumped going into G-Prep," Adams said.
