New trailer helping library STEAM forward with fun, learning

If you’ve stopped by the Sandpoint Library recently, you might have seen the big white trailer parked in the library garden and wondered to yourself: “What is that thing?”

That thing is the library’s new Think, Make, Create Labs mobile makerspace, a “classroom” for discovering innovation and curiosity outside of school. The goal is for the library to bring the trailer around Bonner County and allow kids in every corner of the district to experience learning in fun and innovative new ways, without the pressure of grades or deadlines.

If you’d like a preview of the new trailer, then you are welcome to stop by the library on Monday, Dec. 6, at 2:30 p.m., when we will be celebrating the return of Library Storytime and a host of innovative crafts for kids to create and take home, all built from supplies within the trailer. This is the perfect opportunity to get the family out of the house and connect through creating together.

Curious about the activities we have planned? Kids and parents will be able to assemble and decorate craft stick snowflakes, perfect to hang from a tree or decorate a mantle. Looking for something a little more challenging? Try putting together a craft stick or paper circuit snowman, with a nose that lights up. Or perhaps you’re hoping to have some fun with physics. In that case, you could try to construct a miniature sled out of miscellaneous materials that transports cargo down a slope without spilling.

The trailer is sponsored by STCU and made available to us by the Idaho Out of School Network. Without their invaluable assistance, we wouldn’t be able to provide this new and amazing feature to the community. The best way that the library can show our appreciation is by inviting everyone to stop by and enjoy the trailer, for the first of many programs to come.

Just in case you’re as forgetful as I can be, the event is on Monday, Dec. 6, at 2:30 p.m. We hope to see you there.
