Dec. 9, 1971 – ALPINE SHOP GRAND OPENING

Friday and Saturday are grand opening days for The Alpine Shop, announce Bob Aavedal and Terry Merwin, owners of the former Schweitzer Ski Haus, the Downtown Marina and The Basin Saw Shop. Since the businesses were purchased from Beaner Johnson some weeks ago, the new owners have been preparing for the grand opening with emphasis on ski clothing and equipment and snowmobiles. Bob Aavedal is manager of the Alpine Shop assisted by his wife Linda. Other store personnel are Bill Straley, Russ and Doris Hunter, Craig Harris and Claudia Ammerman. John Murphy is manager of the Basin. Employee-mechanics are Ned Davis and Dan Blood.

FREE FILM FOR YOUNGSTERS SATURDAY

There will be a free movie, plus three cartoons at the Panida Theatre Saturday, courtesy of Sandpoint’s retail merchants, as entertainment for children while their parents shop. “The Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies” will show at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

CHRISTMAS TREE AT FIRST AND CEDAR

A large Christmas tree has been set up at the corner of First and Cedar by the Retail Merchants Committee. The tree, a 35 year old blue spruce, was donated by Les Brown. It was loaded on a truck by the log stacker at the Pack River Colburn mill and hauled by Leonard Fister to Sandpoint. Ed Nettleton lined it up and it was set in place by a Pacific Power and Light boom truck operated by Lee Carrick, Ernie Ribail and Bob Hill.

Dec. 9, 1921 – CITY BREVITIES

A girl [Note: Hazel Virginia Holton, who later became Mrs. Don LaMoreaux] was born Tuesday to Mr. and Mrs. Jay Holton of Larch street.

Arthur Johnson, bookkeeper for the Bonner Meat company, went to Spokane Monday for medical attention under the provisions of the veterans’ bureau. He served in France with the quartermaster corps.

Fred Ekholm, high school senior, who has been ill and under quarantine for smallpox at his parents’ home on First avenue, is making good progress.

MANY ATTEND FORMAL OPENING

The new confectionary and flower show started by C.E. Anderson in the former Martin & Grant grocery building on First ave., had its formal opening Saturday. A four-piece orchestra was on the scene with a constant flow of melody and the store was well crowded at all times and the booths and tables in steady use. Every lady received a bunch of violets and the kids were liberally bestowed with ice cream cones.

CULVER-ODEN NEWS

Joseph Hudon will have seven miles added to the mail route in the near future. He will need a portable soup kitchen when he travels the extra seven miles.

Ted Lloyd is taking a railroad telegraphy course at Hope besides the regular course in the high school.

Mrs. Mary Ponack drew the sheep raffled off by Arnold Berry last week. It cost her 35 cents.
