Dec. 14, 1971 – MRS. VARNEY IS HOSTESS

Widows Club met Wednesday afternoon in the home of Mrs. Rheuama Varney, for a dessert lunch and card games. Prizes went to Mrs. Gida Forgey, high; Mrs. Susie Montague, 2nd; Mrs. Effie Strecker, traveling; Mrs. Edna McArthur won the door prize. Next meeting will be in the home of Mrs. Mabel Selberg.

MRS. BETSY WALKER ELECTED PRESIDENT

Mrs. Greg (Betsy) Walker was elected president of Welcome Wagon Newcomers Club at a meeting in the Panhandle Room of the Pastime Cafe. Also elected were Mrs. Charles (Mary) Bonar, vice president; Mrs. Del (Joanne) Willard of Hope, secretary; Miss Joanne Miller, treasurer; Mrs. Mike (Corrine) Thompson, publicity; and Mrs. William (Irene) Cook, membership. Mrs. Margaret Walker, local hostess, was in charge of the affair, assisted by Mrs. Geraldine Berkey, Hope hostess, and Mrs. Sara Siple, Clark Fork hostess. Mrs. Susan Austin, past president, helped with the election.

INVESTITURE CEREMONY FOR TROOP 168

Brownie Troop 168, Washington School, recently had its investiture ceremony. Troop members are Lisa Osborne, Paula Syth, Chloe Winters, Dena Berntsen, Cynthia Stoicheff, Pam Jackson, Traci Adams, Tammi Conibear, Debbie Deem, Susan Park, Terry Lynn Dunbar, Michelle Jacobson, Lisa Blessington, Dana Blackmore, Karen Kramer and Cynthia Scott. The troop has 13 new Brownies and three second year Brownies. Leader is Diane Berntsen.

Dec. 14, 1921 – PARK LEASE FROM RAILWAY

At the chamber luncheon, a letter from the N.P. railway was read, stating the city could have an indefinite lease, subject to cancellation on 30 days’ notice, of ground in the railway’s original land grant from congress, along the lake shore, and a 99-year lease on other land since acquired, for use as a city park. The grant land includes a strip 200 ft. each side of the tracks, 400 ft. total, and extends over much of the ground proposed for use as a park-site. No land is included north of the city dock. The board voted to tentatively accept the offer, referring the matter for final disposition to the park committee and city council.

NEWS FROM SAGLE

Sagle’s third community Thanksgiving dinner at the Sagle schoolhouse was well attended, with almost 200 present. The Sagle Literary society gave the program.

“MICKEY” BUYS CIGAR STORE

Glen H. Fleming, known to hordes of baseball bugs as “Mickey,” has purchased the cigar store, pool and card room at 222½ First avenue (Bernd building). “Mickey,” who has long since shifted from throwing slants across home to calling them for the other fellow, has named the business the Umpire cigar store.
