RATHDRUM — Lakeland's size proved to be too much for the Bulldogs to handle as the Hawks delivered a 72-49 defeat to Sandpoint boys basketball on Friday night.

Lakeland was all over Sandpoint early and the Bulldogs couldn't get any shots to fall. SHS scored just 14 points in the first half.

Head coach Mike Roos said it's tough to recover from such a slow start.

"Lakeland's a big team so we struggled," he said. "They were just outboarding us. They were just getting the rebounds and we weren't boxing out, and they kind of just had open-season putting second chance shots up."

Sandpoint trailed by 28 points at the half. Facing a deficit that large, the Bulldogs could have just folded in the second half and accepted defeat. But they didn't and outscored Lakeland 35-30 in the final 16 minutes.

"In the second half, the kids didn't quit," Roos said. "They came out and they were ready to play in the second half and we came back. They could of just put their heads down and said, 'OK, we'll just look for the next game.' But we just took it quarter-by-quarter and just tried to get a little better, and that's kind of been my message."

Roos said the effort he saw from the Bulldogs in the second half says a lot about the character of his team.

"They had a great attitude," he said. "They fought to the last second and they are a team that is just not going to give up."

Roos' son, Colin Roos, led the team with 17 points.

"Everybody's improving their game but tonight Colin Roos played extremely hard," Roos said.

Darren Bailey poured in 12 and Arie VanDenBerg added seven.

Roos said the Bulldogs need to work on getting more people involved offensively because he wants at least four players to reach double figures on a nightly basis.

Sandpoint (3-6, 0-4 Inland Empire League) travels to Priest River at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday before hosting Coeur d'Alene on Thursday and Lewiston on Saturday.

The upcoming schedule is brutal for the Bulldogs, but Roos said the team is taking it in stride and focusing on one game at a time.
