POST FALLS — Sandpoint wrestling competed in the first day of the 24th annual River City Duals tournament on Friday night at Post Falls High.

The Bulldogs went 2-1 in duals, claiming wins over Timberlake and Orofino. Sandpoint finished the night with a battle against Post Falls, the defending 5A state champions, and the Trojans handed the Bulldogs a 81-0 defeat.

Head coach Jake Stark said its tough not to win a single match, but his team went after Post Falls and didn't go down without a fight.

"We wrestled with a lot of heart," he said. "It's tough wrestling the No. 2 team in the state, but I give those guys credit, they got a lot of experience."

With the loss to the Trojans, Sandpoint finished second in pod A at the tournament and will compete for the silver championship on Saturday.

SHS opened the day against Timberlake and bullied them 65-21. The Bulldogs also beat the Tigers 63-18 on Dec. 16 at Les Rogers Court.

Forrest Ambridge, Braden Norris, Shane Sherrill, Darrian Resso, Jacob Crum, Owen Wimmer, Matt Thurlow and Carson Laybourne all won their bouts by pin to lead Sandpoint to victory. Trevan Adam also claimed his match by technical fall.

Next up for the Bulldogs was the Maniacs, and they dominated Orofino 77-12. SHS won nine matches via forfeit. Adam earned another victory by technical fall, and Resso, Wimmer and Christian Troumbley-Karkoski all secured pins.

"We wrestled Timberlake great," Stark said. "We were just clicking and everybody was wrestling solid and that just carried over to Orofino, and we took it to those guys."

The Bulldogs have faced some of the best teams in the state over the past few days and Stark said his team is certainly battle-tested.

"It definitely has built our character, built our strength," he said. "We know what things we need to clean up and work on ... and I'm glad we get to wrestle this much with the situation we're in with all the COVID-19 stuff going on."

Sandpoint will face Bonners Ferry at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the River City Duals. With a win, the Bulldogs would earn a spot in the silver championship dual.

SHS is hoping to avenge a 48-42 "B" Cup defeat to the Badgers.

"We're hungry for that one," Stark said about Saturday's dual.
