Sandpoint wrestling falls to top-ranked Lakeland, Nampa

RATHDRUM — Sandpoint wrestling fell to Lakeland, the fourth-ranked team in 4A, and Nampa, the No. 1 team in 4A, in a pair of duals Thursday night.

The Bulldogs opened the night against their bitter rival from Rathdrum and lost 64-8.

"We battled but Lakeland came out on top and got us," head coach Jake Stark said. "But it's not districts yet. We're going to see them a couple more times before the year is out. We'll just close the gap like we did against Kellogg."

The Hawks won eight matches by pin and five by decision. Jacob Albany and Forrest Ambridge picked up the only victories for the Bulldogs. At 106 pounds, Albany pinned his opponent in 2:58 while Ambridge defeated Lakeland's Reilly Saxe 7-1.

Trevan Adam and Darrian Resso both barely lost their bouts by decision and Stark thought they wrestled really good.

"If I had to pick anybody that wrestled the best against Lakeland it was him," he said about Resso.

Against Nampa, Sandpoint claimed five matches, but it wasn't enough as they fell 60-22.

"We came out a little more determined after we lost to Lakeland and wrestled Nampa pretty solid," Stark said. "We held our own ... and we fought with them the whole time."

Shane Sherrill (132) and Resso (145) both earned victories by pin. Adam won his match by majority decision and Smith secured a 5-2 win at 195 pounds.

The Bulldogs will compete in the River City Duals on Friday and Saturday at Post Falls High School.
