Spartans capture third in copper bracket at River City Duals

POST FALLS — The Priest River wrestling team took part in the 24th annual River City Duals tournament this past weekend.

Across two days of action, the Spartans went 1-4 in duals to capture third place in the copper bracket at the tournament.

On Saturday morning, Priest River faced Post Falls' second team in a semifinal in the copper bracket. The Spartans lost six bouts by forfeit en route to a 53-24 defeat.

Hayden Sorbel, Keith Poirier and Aidan Troumbley secured victories by pin while Bradley Bennett accepted a win by forfeit at 170 pounds.

The loss moved the Spartans to the bracket's third-place match to take on Orofino. Priest River took care of business and earned its first and sole dual victory of the tournament, toppling the Maniacs 36-24.

The schools double forfeited at five weights, and Bennett and Matyus McLain earned wins by pin to help lead the Spartans to glory. At 182 pounds, McLain pinned his opponent in a mere 32 seconds.

To claim a spot in the copper bracket, Priest River went 0-3 in duals on Friday.

The Spartans opened the tourney with a match against Lakeland, one of the best 4A teams in the state. Priest River gave it their all, but six forfeits allowed the Hawks to cruise to a 72-18 victory.

Despite the lopsided defeat, three Spartans had stellar performances to grab wins by pin. Sorbel took down Lakeland's Duke Williamson in 2:33, Keith Poirier beat his opponent in 1:07 and Troumbley dismantled the Hawk he faced in 2:30.

In their second dual on Friday, the Spartans lost to 5A Lewiston 66-22.

Once again, Sorbel, Keith Poirier and Troumbley led the way for Priest River. Keith Poirier and Troumbley notched wins by pin while Sorbel won by majority decision.

To wrap up competition on the first day of the tournament, Priest River took the mat against St. Maries. The Spartans had quite the battle with the Lumberjacks, claiming six victories. But forfeits at 145, 220 and 285 pounds proved to be the difference for St. Maries, who won 36-33.

Troumbley earned his third pin of the day while Sorbel secured his second. Devin Nessel claimed a 13-9 win at 126 pounds, and Keegan Poirier and Bennett also tallied pins.

Sorbel and Troumbley both went undefeated at the tournament and overall the Spartans finished 15th as a team.

Priest River will compete on its home floor for the first time this winter at 5 p.m. tonight when they host Bonners Ferry and Moscow at PRLHS.
