RATHDRUM — Priest River wrestling beat down 4A Lakeland 46-30 in a dual on Tuesday night.

The Hawks rested most of their varsity wrestlers and the Spartans took advantage.

Priest River won seven matches by pin. Hayden Sorbel, Keith Poirier, Aidan Troumbley, Egil Williams, Devin Nessel, Charles Bennett and Bradley Bennett all secured pins. Keegan Poirier claimed his match at 152 pounds by majority decision, 11-0.

Four of the five bouts Lakeland won came by forfeit.

Last Wednesday, the Spartans hosted a dual for the first time this season when they faced Moscow at PRLHS.

The Bears, a class 4A school, had a much bigger squad, but that didn't stop Priest River from giving Moscow quite fight.

Unfortunately, forfeits at 113, 145, 220 and 285 pounds were too much for the Spartans to overcome and they fell 40-36.

Assistant coach Randy Poirier served as the head coach for Priest River against the Bears with Quinton Holbrook still in quarantine.

Holbrook returned to the team this Monday, but was unable to attend the River City Duals on Jan. 15-16, the Intermountain League Duals on Jan. 19 and the home dual in-person. Instead, Holbrook was stuck watching the events on livestreams.

Holbrook said it was tough being away from the team and a bit frustrating at times, but he knew the Spartans were in good hands with Randy Poirier at the helm.

"I'd rather them keep going with their season then me mess it up," Holbrook said last Thursday. "It would normally be really hard, but the assistant coach I got, Randy Poirier, I've worked with him for a lot of years ... so we're on the same page on the way we do things."

Despite the defeat to Moscow, the Spartans had several standout performances. At 120 pounds, Keith Poirier pinned Moscow's Sam Young in 3:37 to earn the first victory of the dual for Priest River. Troumbley dismantled his opponent in just over a minute and a half at 132 pounds and Bradley Bennett picked up a pin at 170 pounds in 1:52.

Matyus McLain earned the last win of the night for the Spartans, pinning his opponent in 1:38 at 182 pounds. Dylan Lord and Charles Bennett claimed victories by forfeit.

McLain moved up from 170 pounds in the dual with the Bears and it paid off.

"Matyus did really well," Holbrook said. "I wasn't expecting that one. "He went up weight and pulled the victory off, so that was pretty impressive."

After the varsity dual, six JV matches were held between the two schools. Nessel and Williams grabbed pins at 138 pounds and Shayd Wong-Yuen beat Jason Swam from Moscow 4-3.

"My JV guys are the ones I was really excited about because you got to have those guys coming up and those guys really stepped it up," Holbrook said. "Even the ones that lost, lost close ones and they worked hard until the very end."

Holbrook's squad is mostly made up of freshmen and sophomores, and he said he has seen his inexperienced team really improve over the last few weeks.

"We're definitely building," he said. "I think everybody is starting to see that and the next couple of years should be pretty exciting."

The end of the season is nearing and Holbrook thinks his team can make some noise down the stretch.

"I'm super excited about where we're sitting," he said. "Honestly, I think we're looking at probably eight or nine guys that we might be able to send down to state this year."

Priest River will compete in the North Idaho Rumble this Friday and Saturday at Coeur d'Alene High.
