16U Lakers take care of Rogers, host Mt. Spokane today
SANDPOINT — The 16U North Idaho Lakers finished off a doubleheader sweep of Rogers on Saturday in dramatic fashion.
Trailing Rogers (Spokane) 4-2 entering the fourth, the Lakers scored four runs in the top of the inning to take their first lead of the game at 6-4. But Rogers came right back in the bottom of the inning and tied the contest at 6-6.
The Peak Sand and Gravel Lakers retook the lead in the fifth with a pair of runs and Alex Leverich stepped on the mound in the bottom of the inning to try and earn the save. Rogers was able to score one run on a passed ball, but Alex threw a strikeout with two outs and the tying run on third base to secure the thrilling 8-7 victory for the Lakers.
The game was called after five innings due in part to the heat.
Jacob Hansen went 2 for 3 in the game and drove in a run. Coleman Inge, Brady Newhart and Kaipoi Wong-Yuen also recorded RBIs. Jorden Tyler started on the bump. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs over four innings.
In the opener, nine stolen bases allowed the Lakers to score 13 runs on just five hits.
The Lakers tallied five runs in the second inning and six in the third to build an advantage Rogers couldn't overcome. North Idaho won 13-8.
Zach Leverich recorded a pair of triples, and Newhart and Hansen each drove in two runs. Alex allowed four hits and four runs over three innings on the mound. Cole Sanroman relieved him and racked up five strikeouts over four innings while surrendering four hits and two earned runs.
