19U, 16U Lakers both secure league sweeps

SANDPOINT — The North Idaho Lakers reigned supreme on Wednesday.

The 19U and 16U American Legion teams both secured doubleheader sweeps.

The 16U squad took the stage at War Memorial Field to face Shadle Park in Spokane League play. The opening game was a low-scoring affair, but Brady Newhart delivered the game-winning run. In the bottom of the third, Newhart hit an RBI triple to score Chase Sanroman and give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.

That's the only run North Idaho needed to secure the victory thanks to Alex Leverich's performance on the mound. He pitched a one-hit shutout.

The Lakers jumped on Shadle Park early in the second game, scoring four runs in the first inning. North Idaho was able to fend off the Shockers the rest of the way and grab a 10-4 win.

Alex went 3 for 3 at the plate, and Newhart, Gavin Day and Zach Leverich each tallied two hits.

Cole Sanroman started on the mound and allowed two hits and two earned runs over four innings.

The 16U Peak Sand and Gravel Lakers (10-8-1) head to Cheney on Saturday for a doubleheader.

The 19U team was in Kellogg on Wednesday for a North Idaho League doubleheader against Silver Valley.

North Idaho continued its recent hot streak at the plate, racking up 20 hits in a 21-5 win in the opener.

Kody MacDonald, Avery Bocksch and Mick Koch all went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Greg Belgarde and Trevor Brackett each drove in three runs.

In the nightcap, Silver Valley kept things much closer. The Lakers trailed 4-3 after three innings, but in the fourth they scored four runs to pull ahead. The squad held off a late rally to earn a 7-5 victory.

Finn Mellander and Belgarde both went 2 for 3 and MacDonald also posted a pair of hits.

The 19U Lakers (12-14) head to Whitefish, Montana, today to play in the Sapa-Johnsrud Memorial Tournament.
