July 11, 1971 – ‘PICNIC’ ATTENDANCE LOW
Less than 15,000 persons attended the widely publicized Universal Life Church “picnic” at Farragut State Park last weekend. Advance attendance estimates for the three-day event ranged as high as 50,000, but Kootenai County officials at the site estimated peak attendance at slightly more than 14,000. Generally, the gathering sponsored by the California-based “church” was orderly and without incident. Sales of drugs and narcotics were common in the park during the weekend but no serious overdose cases were reported.

START BUILDING AT TALACHE
A Spokane construction engineer on Thursday morning began the construction of a 50-room boarding house and a number of smaller frame buildings in which to house the mine employes (sic).
The 150-ton mill to be built here this summer and fall will not be located, as at first stated, on the lake shore, but will be set on a bench just below the site of the mine dump. Just how soon construction of the mill will begin cannot be stated at this time.
