16U Lakers extend winning streak to 10

SANDPOINT — The 16U North Idaho Lakers held off a late rally from Whitman County (Pullman) in the nightcap on Monday to grab a sweep in Spokane League action at War Memorial Field.
The victories over the Cougars allowed the Lakers to improve to 14-1-1 in league play.
North Idaho looked like they were coasting to a win in the nightcap, building a 14-4 advantage in the final inning. However, the Cougars stormed back with nine runs in the bottom of the fifth to create some late drama.
With two outs and the bases loaded, pitcher Coleman Inge was able to force Whitman into a ground out to end the game. It wasn't easy, but the 14-13 victory allowed the Lakers to extend their winning streak to 10 games.
Cole Sanroman drove in four runs on a pair of hits, and Gavin Day and Zach Leverich each recorded three RBIs.
A nine-run first inning allowed North Idaho to pickup a 16-7 win in the opener.
Brady Newhart, Inge and Zach all had two RBIs. Zach hit a solo home run in the second inning.
The Lakers headed to Cheney on Saturday and picked up a pair of league victories.
In the opener, North Idaho jumped out to a 6-3 lead, but Cheney mounted a comeback in the final inning. The Summer Hawks scored two in the bottom of the fifth, but Tyson Troudt caught a liner to left field to record the third out and secure the 6-5 win for the Lakers.
Cole, Chase Sanroman and Alex Leverich all saw time on the mound. Zach went 2 for 3 and Chase brought in a pair of runs on two hits.
North Idaho cruised to a 7-1 in the second game. Inge and Alex both went 2 for 2, and Alex also tallied three RBIs.
The Lakers (15-8-1) wrap up regular season play today with a doubleheader against Gonzaga Prep starting at 4 p.m. at Pine Street Field.
