DOVER – The city of Dover is getting a new post office.
City officials received a letter from the U.S. Postal Service approving the construction of a brand new post office in the growing community.
“We received an initial denial for the post office when we first started this process,” said Jay Hassell in a phone interview on Friday.
Hassell is a civil engineer working with the city to build the new post office, which is still in the early stages of development.
“Through continued efforts, a formal letter came back saying we could move this project forward," he said. "I think that was some great news for the city.”
Architects, consultants, USPS personnel, and civil engineers like Hassell are a few of the many groups that will come together to make the new facility a reality.
Right now, city officials are communicating with a USPS real estate specialist based in Denver to determine the best location for the new post office.
One parcel of land already owned by the city, at Fourth and Roosevelt streets, was considered as a potential location, but was scrapped because it is too small for USPS requirements.
Dover officials are also in the process of deciding on an architect for the new structure. Bids are currently being collected, and recommendations from engineers will be presented to council members in August’s meeting.
Dover’s population has increased at an average of 8.7% for the past five years, according to U.S. Census data. As of Friday, there are no post office boxes available in Dover’s post office on Jackson Street. A fact that council member Dan Parkin touched on in July’s meeting,
“For those of you who live in Dover and can't get a P.O. box, there's light at the end of the tunnel."
A light that’s still a ways away. There is no set date for the completion of the post office, Hassell is hopeful the project will reach completion in 2023.
The post office will be a regular agenda item in upcoming Dover city council meetings. The next council meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Aug. 12 in Dover City Hall.
