July 18, 1971 – NEW RESTAURANT OPENS

Richard Hollars has opened The Garden, a rustic and unique restaurant constructed out of an old home on East Lake St., between Eddie’s Shell and Sandpoint Marina. The Garden is unlike any other restaurant in Sandpoint or even North Idaho. Inside, flowers hang from the ceiling, with cut flowers in vases and potted plants on the floor. More flowers and plants decorate a tree-shaded outdoor deck. Brightly colored old style chairs and informal tables fill the dining room. Colored glasses on each table are cut from old wine bottles. Diners will remember their visit to The Garden not just for top steaks, or for unusual salads, or flowers, or the view. Their lasting impression will include all of these things.

He found the ranchers willing to help in putting them in. Mr. Pearson and Mr. Garrison of the local hatchery made a trip up the Little Sand to find if a fish ladder would be practical over the city waterworks dam.
