July 22, 1971 – BEACH BARBECUE PLANNED

Plans have been finalized for the Sandpoint Lions Club’s annual beach benefit barbecue Sunday at the city beach. A beef barbecue will be served from 1 to 8 p.m. Sandpoint Town Band with some sixteen musicians, will entertain with two concerts. A course is being set for water skiing competition and there will be a horseshoe pitching contest. The Spokane Parachute Club has scheduled three flyovers, with 12 planned jumps. The dunk tank may not be used this year due to an electrical short in the equipment.

$813,015 GRANT FOR BONNER GENERAL

Bonner General Hospital’s $1,869,000 building project appeared assured this week when $813,015 in Hill-Burton federal grant funds were earmarked for its use. This means that the proposed new 46-bed community hospital can be constructed with little more than $1 million in commercial financing. Plans call for constructing the new building directly across Second Ave. from the present hospital.

ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED

Mr. and Mrs. Albert E. Ring of Yakima, Wash., announce the engagement of their daughter, Christine to Christian Aaron Perks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Perks of Sandpoint. Miss Ring attends Central Washington State College. Perks is also attending CWSC after graduating from Lower Columbia College. No wedding date has been set.

July 22, 1921 – NEWS FROM SAGLE

Haying in this section is well under way. Although much hay is down everyone hopes for a good rain to clear the air and help finish the later grain hay.

30 FOREST FIRES IN 10 DAYS

Twenty new fires on the Pend d’Oreille forest and ten on the Kaniksu were reported for the last 10-day period to forest service headquarters. Though there are numerous fires in this section, the only big loss reported is that of 120,000 feet of decked logs near Twin bridges on Pack river. These belonged to the Humbird Lumber co. and were set ablaze Friday when a slash fire set by a settler got beyond control.

RECUPERATING AT CLARKSFORK

William Klug returned to Clarksfork last week from California, where he was injured two months ago in an airplane fall of 1000 feet. The pilot was killed and Klug was so seriously injured it was thought he would die. He received serious injuries to his head and neck, a broken leg and a crushed foot. He returned to his former home, where his parents live, immediately after leaving the hospital.

J.A. Fitzwater lost a wheel by theft yesterday. He had it parked on First, near the forestry offices.
