PCTU holding Trout Trivia night

| July 27, 2021 1:00 AM

Do you have what it takes to win the mighty Bull Trout Trivia?

Panhandle Chapter of Trout Unlimited is hosting its first Trout Trivia event Thursday at Matchwood Brewing Co., 513 Oak St. The fun begins at 7 p.m. In addition to the trivia, there will be a door prize as a fundraiser for PCTU.

Participation is free and all ages are welcome. As a result of COVID-19, the chapter's annual Trout and About Festival has been delayed. However, in efforts to continue to raise awareness, PCTU members invite all new, young, and veteran anglers to come together and enjoy good food, cold beverages, and learn a little something about bull trout, The trivia questions will test your knowledge of North Idaho’s vulnerable bull trout and other critical trout species touching on topics like identity, history, ecology, and habitat.

Since 1998, bull trout have been federally protected under the Endangered Species Act, and they occur in reduced numbers in five western states and two Canadian provinces. Montana and Idaho are the bull trout’s strongholds, but even here they face a chance of eventual extinction in some streams where they live.

Bull trout species are incredibly vital to indicating water quality, in that they need cold, clean, complex, and connected habitats to thrive, PTCU officials said. As their habitats continue to be altered by threats like degradation, accidental harvesting, migratory blockages, and climate change their protection is needed more than ever. While out fishing this summer remember to "take no bull."
