100 Years Ago — 1921

Mrs. Jessie Hawkins Tuck, county school superintendent, visited Dist. 9 (Settlement) and says the school house is in the poorest condition of any school house in Bonner County and that permission must be secured to hold school in it until a new building can be constructed. If the plans for a new building fail, no school can be held, as Dr. Floyd Wendle, county health officer, has already condemned the building, she said.

90 Years Ago — 1931

Paul Rapp this week launched an inboard motor boat on the Pend Oreille which he will use as a pleasure boat this summer.

80 Years Ago — 1941

School bus purchased

Purchase was made last week by directors of School District No. 13 of a used school bus to replace the one used in the Settlement for the past few years.

70 Years Ago — 1951

Life saved by Boy Scout

Delano Engblom, 15-year-old-son of Mr. And Mrs. Ray Engblom, proved the worth of his Boy Scout lifesaving training when he rescued Mrs. Betty Lavaux from the Pend Oreille River Sunday morning.

60 Years Ago — 1961

14th celebration held

Priest River’s 14th annual Loggers Celebration July 29 will be highlighted by a gigantic parade, with many new units entered. Junior Amateur Lumberjack contests will be held at the Recreation Park east of town at 2:30 p.m. On Sunday, July 30, the lumberjack contests will begin a 1:30 p.m.

50 Years Ago — 1971

Critical situation

A critical situation has arisen at the swimming beach where youngsters persist in climbing up on the railroad bridge and jumping off. At one time a freight train was forced to stop, and complaints have been received from the train agent in Spokane.

40 Years Ago — 1981

Huckleberries celebrated

A good-sized crowd showed up Saturday morning to help celebrate the first annual Huckleberry Festival, even though rain had canceled the first event of the day, the pancake breakfast. While the temperature continued to heat up the town, volunteers from Priest River and West Pend Oreille fire districts managed to cool things down as they battled at the annual water fight.

30 Years Ago — 1991

Business victimized

A Priest River business lost $1,700 in merchandise to fraud, becoming one of dozens of companies that have fallen victim to a credit card scam now sweeping the nation. The business asked to have its name withheld.

20 Years Ago — 2001

Rain breaks tradition

For 20 years, Priest River’s community celebration has been held under sunny skies on what often seemed to be the hottest day of the year. There were close calls, but luck ran out this year on Timber Day. Raindrops held off Saturday for the fun run, drizzled over the Huckleberry breakfasters, took a break for the parade, and drenched the logging competitions. Generally, it was a pretty soggy day.
