Virginia L. Ross

Virginia L. Ross passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at North Idaho Hospice, Schneidmiller House in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. She was born on May 7, 1927 to John W. Storey and Clara Esther Clements Storey at Emporia, Kansas. She was the second of seven children.

Virginia attended a one room rural school through the eighth grade. She graduated from Toledo Township High School in 1945 and two months later entered Christ’s Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated in 1948 as a registered nurse. She married Jack C. Ross on August 20, 1945. She continued her nursing career until the age of 64, working as an operating room nurse, public health nurse and home health nurse. She earned her Red Cross pin and certificate while teaching home nursing classes. She was recognized for having the only class with perfect attendance. Her professional memberships included Association of Operating Room Nurses and Idaho State Nurses Association.

Virginia joined Sandpoint First Presbyterian Church in 1952. She served as an elder, treasurer, Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School director, as well as helping with hospitality events. Virginia was involved with Camp Fire Girls when living in Kootenai County, and later a Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader and a room mother at Washington School. For nearly 20 years she served on the election board at Washington Precinct. She also worked on school levy special elections.

Virginia belonged to TOPS ID 0208, Red Hat Society. Shortly before retirement she took up quilting and became a member of Clark Fork Valley Quilters, making many quilts which she gifted to family, friends and charities. In 2004 she felt greatly honored to be selected as a Woman of Wisdom. Virginia was a master homemaker, but baking was her special interest, making Christmas cookies for her family and many friends every year.

Family always came first. She is survived by children Kathy and Steve Zender, Tim and Sandy Ross, Dick Ross and Ann Ross. She also survived by sisters Esther Glaze and Carol Ray, five grandchildren: Eric and Marcy Zender, Shannon and Derrick Main, Brent and Michelle Carter, Taylor and Megan Carter and Dillon Carter; five great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. Virginia was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jack C. Ross; her parents, John and Clara Storey; brothers, Robert Storey, Jimmy Storey; and sisters, Bettey Jo Knight and Mary B. Medcalf.

Services will be at the First Presbyterian Church, 417 N. Fourth Ave., Sandpoint, ID at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 3, 2021.
