SANDPOINT — A rare triple play in the first inning of the second game capped off a doubleheader sweep for the North Idaho Lakers class A (19U) team on Saturday.

The American Legion baseball team earned a pair of North Idaho League wins over the Lewis-Clark Cubs at War Memorial Field.

Avery Bocksch, who earned all-league honors for the Sandpoint baseball team this spring, started on the mound in the opener and allowed two hits and two runs over 5 1/3 innings while striking out eight.

The Lakers scored two in the third and three in the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead. The squad added three more runs in the sixth to finish off an 8-2 win over the Cubs.

Everett Hannah, who took home all-league honors this spring for Priest River baseball, went 3 for 4 at the plate, stole four bases and drove in a run. He also relieved Bocksch on the bump and only allowed one hit over 1 2/3 innings.

Mike Riley drove in a pair of runs and the Lakers stole a total of nine bases.

In the second game, Riley came in clutch for the Lakers. He went 3 for 5 and tallied three RBIs. Two of those RBIs came in the bottom of the seventh inning when Riley hit a single to bring in Mick Koch and Greg Belgarde and give the Lakers an 8-7 walk-off victory over the Cubs.

The Lakers trailed 7-5 entering the final inning, but scored three runs to complete a sweep of Lewis-Clark. The victories allowed the Lakers to improve to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in North Idaho League play.

Jack Ringer started on the mound and allowed two hits and no runs over three innings while recording four strikeouts.

Zeke Roop, Kody MacDonald, Ringer, Hannah and Belgarde each had two hits in the game. The Lakers racked up 14 total hits.

On Monday, the Lakers headed to Rathdrum to battle Northern Lakes in a doubleheader. The Lakers fell in the opener 7-1. Their only run came in the fourth inning when Roop grounded out to score Riley.

Ringer started on the bump and allowed eight hits and six runs over 5 1/3 innings. The loss dropped the Lakers to 3-4 in North Idaho League play.

In the series finale, the Lakers attempted a late rally after falling behind 4-1, but came up just short. Northern Lakes secured a 4-3 nonleague victory.

Dillon Terry hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to bring the Lakers within one run, but the team was unable to get Terry home from third base.

Despite the loss, the Lakers outhit Northern Lakes 7-4.

The class A squad (3-5) will be looking for revenge when they host a doubleheader with Northern Lakes at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Lakers class B (16U) team was also in action this weekend. The team, who is playing in the Spokane League, battled the Mead Panthers in a doubleheader and walked away with a pair of 10-run rule victories thanks to their bats.

Across the series, the Lakers scored 51 runs and tallied 35 hits.

The Lakers (3-5) won the opener 25-4. Chase Sanroman had a monster game at the plate, recording four hits and driving in three runs. Gavin Day and Coleman Inge also had three RBIs, and Zach Leverich and Kaipoi Wong-Yuen each drove in two runs.

Alex Leverich tossed seven strikeouts over three innings. The Lakers scored 15 runs in the sixth inning.

The Lakers allowed one run in the first inning of the second game, but held Mead scoreless the rest of the way to capture a 26-1 win.

Chase Sanroman and Jorden Tyler each drove in five runs and recorded two hits. Cole Sanroman, Coleman Inge, Brady Newhart, Zach Leverich, Alex Leverich and Tyson Troudt also tallied multiple RBIs.

Tyler started on the bump and struck out five over four innings while allowing three hits.

The class B Lakers head to Shadle Park on Friday for a doubleheader.
