Containment of Little Pine Fire increases

| June 26, 2021 1:00 AM

PRIEST RIVER — Fire crews were able to increase the containment of the Little Pine Fire ahead of next week's forecasted record-breaking heat.

The fire is now estimated to be 25% contained and the acres again decrease to 174 with more precise mapping, Idaho Department of Lands fire officials said in a press release. Crews were able to get a fire line around most of the perimeter on Thursday using heavy equipment and hand line from 4 firefighting crews. Groundwork was assisted by helicopter water drops throughout the day, officials said.

Fire behavior overnight was minimal with creeping and smoldering and remains within Idaho endowment timberland boundaries.

On Friday, crews focused completing line construction and continuing mop up operations. As firefighter and public safety is the number one priority, IDL officials said crews are being mindful of heat exhaustion as effort continue on the fire. Daytime temperatures are expected to reach into the 100s.

"The public should expect to see smoke as the fire burns internal pockets of fuels," IDL officials said. "These pockets may produce large plumes at times due to the heavy fuel loading in the area."

Incident management team thanked the local community for their support and reminded everyone that firefighters are well supplied with everything they need, so community donations are not necessary.

"Please consider directing your generosity to support your local fire department or other emergency responders," they said.

The fire is burning 7 miles north of Priest River in Pine Creek, 1 mile south of Blue Lake in Bonner County, Idaho. It was reported Tuesday, June 22 at 3 p.m.
