PAPER BOY ALERTS FIREMEN

An alert paper carrier, Mike Longbottom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Longbottom, 405 Lavina, saved the Leonard Plaster family from loss of their home early Sunday. While on his Spokesman-Review route, young Longbottom discovered a blaze well underway in the attic of the Plaster home at 302 S. Boyer. He tried to rouse Plaster, then crossed the street to Leo Hadley’s home at 303 S. Boyer and had the Hadleys call in the fire. Firemen held the blaze to the attic, extinguishing it before it could work its way down into the house. There was extensive damage to some of the rafters, but family belongings were spared, except for a water soaking. The home is a local landmark, known by old timers as the Southmayd home.

March 2, 1921 – HIGH SCHOOL NOTES

The school board granted a half day holiday on George Washington’s birthday, heartily welcomed by the students. The special patriotic menu the cafeteria planned for Feb. 22 was served Feb. 23.

Steps are being taken to keep the gymnasium in a sanitary state. All students using the lockers must have individual towels and soap and keep lockers in good order. It is asked that bruises and scratches be treated at once to prevent infection.

SNEAK THIEF AT CAMP NO. 15

A sneak thief, operating at Humbird camp No. 15 while the crew slept, robbed John Hill of $110 in currency and four pay checks totaling $186. It is impossible to fix the guilt as there were 14 or 15 “transients” or floaters in the camp and no clue was left by the thief. No one else was robbed.

FATHERS AND SONS BOOST BOY SCOUTS

Two hundred fathers, actual or adopted for the occasion, and 300 sons, dined Friday evening at the K. of P. hall at the annual “Father and Son” banquet, sponsored this year for the first time by the Chamber of Commerce. The dinner, served by the ladies of the Lutheran church, was excellent in every way. All in all, the event was one of the most successful of its kind ever staged in the city and the dinner was overrun with a spontaneous and abundant enthusiasm.
