March 4, 1971 – JACK JONES RESIGNS

Jack Jones, superintendent of Bonner County School District No. 82, has resigned, effective June 30, to accept a similar position at Mountain Home, a community about the size of Sandpoint 40 miles south of Boise. Jones is a Sandpoint native, a graduate of Sandpoint High School and the University of Idaho. He earned his master’s degree from U of I in 1950 and began his teaching career in Sandpoint that fall at the old high school, which is now the Junior High [Note; in 2021, the Sandpoint Events Center]. This is his 12th year as Superintendent in Bonner County.

WESTMOND LIVEWIRES

Westmond Livewires 4-H Club held their first meeting of 1971 Feb. 20 in the Westmond Grange hall. New officers are: Bonnie Beers, president; Chuck Thompson, vice president; Tracy Irish, secretary; Diane Beers, historian; and Debbie Thompson, treasurer. The first sewing meeting will be Mar. 3 after school at the Allards.

DR. C.G. SMICK LEASES HAYDEN OFFICE

Chas. G. Smick, M.D., has leased the office of the late Wilbur C. Hayden, M.D., and will conduct a private practice in the clinic building adjacent to Bonner General Hospital on Third Ave. Dr. Smick, who practiced in Sandpoint a few years ago in association with another physician, has practiced in the Spokane area for the past few years.

March 4, 1921 – HARDING TAKES OATH

President Warren G. Harding today took his oath of office in one of the most simple and unostentatious ceremonies since the time of Jefferson. In his inaugural address the president pledged conscientious guidance of the ship of state, giving every promise of that steadfast integrity which the American people in November expressed themselves as believing to be his.

SENATE PASSES BILL FOR NEW STATE

The new state resolution passed the senate by a vote of 38 to 3, after an address by former Lt. Governor H.H. Taylor of Sandpoint who declared the resolution was not born in a spirit of secession or animosity but because the natural barriers make it more convenient that the north join with part of Washington. The bill authorizes an Idaho commission to meet with a similar Washington body to come to a common understanding with the end in view of presenting separation memorials to the next legislatures in both states.

KOOTENAI WATER MAIN BREAKS

Residents of Kootenai have been using lake water since Monday, which after straining out the polly-wogs and other livestock, they claim to be very good indeed. This was occasioned by a break in the main just south of the roundhouse at Kootenai, where the said main crosses a ravine.
