BONNERS FERRY — In its final meet before spring break, the Sandpoint track and field team showed out at the Bonners Ferry Invitational on Saturday.

The girls captured the team title while the boys finished second to Timberlake.

“Looking at our times we were all really pleased with how the kids did,” head coach Matt Brass said. “Just being able to pick up a meet before spring break was great.”

The Bulldogs were scheduled to take on Lake City in a dual this past Wednesday, but the event was canceled due to weather. Brass quickly moved to see if they could get into the Bonners Ferry Invite and on Wednesday night, he got the go-ahead.

Given the short notice and other reasons, a handful of Bulldogs were unable to participate in Saturday’s meet, including Rusty Lee, Jett Lucas and Taylor Petz, the newly-crowned school record holder in the girls pole vault.

In total, 33 boys and 20 girls competed for SHS.

With so few girls, Brass said the squad raised some eyebrows when the final results were announced and they learned they had edged out host Bonners Ferry 203 to 183.5.

“I think everyone was really impressed with what they were able to do with such a small group,” he said.

The distance crew was able to rack up plenty of points for the girls. In the 800, Sandpoint claimed all three podium spots. Maren Davidson took first in the event with a time of 2:30.69, currently fifth fastest in 4A, Mackenzie Suhy-Gregoire was second and Ara Clark placed third. All three ran personal bests.

In the 1600, Sandpoint swept the top four places. Suhy-Gregoire captured first, Megan Oulman second, Ara third and Grace Rookey, a freshman, was fourth.

Jillian Primgaard grabbed the title in the 400 with a season best of 1:03.88. Camille Neuder ran a 3200 at a meet for the first time and finished second. Payton Betz was right behind her in third.

Davidson, Ara and several other distance runners competed in a number of field events, showcasing their decathlete-like versatility.

Ara took third in the discus, besting her previous PR by more than 20 feet, and fourth in the pole vault, while Davidson placed third in the long jump and seventh in the pole vault.

Davidson also ran a leg on the 4x400 relay team that placed first with the fourth-fastest time in 4A. Primgaard, Rookey and Piper Frank were also on the relay.

“She’s got a lot of range,” Brass said, “and so as the season goes on it will just be helping her identify what she really likes and what her best events are.”

Destiny Lyons, a junior, competed in the 300 hurdles for the first time and secured first. Her time of 51.62 is currently third fastest in 4A. Betz was fourth in the event.

Freshman Aliya Strock had herself a day, placing second in the 100 with a PR of 14.15 and second in the long jump with a PR of 14 feet, 3 inches. She also ran legs in the 4x100 and 4x200 relay. Both relays took second.

Lyons, Frank, and Anna Reinink were a part of those two relays as well. Reinink was third in the triple jump and fourth in the 100. Frank earned second in the pole vault, and Lyons tied for fifth in the event with Tiffany Brown.

In shot put, Kayla Remsen captured third with a mark of 29 feet, 11.5 inches, fifth best in 4A. Freshman Ivy Smith tied for fourth in the event and was sixth in the discus. Remsen also took fourth in the discus.

Quinn Hooper tied for third in the pole vault.

On the boys side, senior Nikolai Braedt told Brass he was feeling a little under the weather, but it didn’t show in his results. He earned first in the 800 and 1600. His time in the 800, a PR, is second best in 4A and his mark in the 1600 is third fastest.

“When he finished he was like, ‘Yeah, I’m just not feeling myself and I was like, ‘Well, that’s a good sign if you’re running those times,’” Brass joked.

Keegan Nelson was right behind Braedt in the 1600 taking second and Trey Clark was third in the event.

Ben Ricks, a junior, showed plenty of range by grabbing titles in the 400 and 3200.

“That was his first two-mile that he’s ever run,” Brass said about Ricks, “so he was a little nervous. Angie [Brass] did a really good job of coaching him up on it.”

In the 400, six of the top eight finishers came from Sandpoint. Nelson was fourth and Trey fifth, and freshmen Keane Haesle, Will Jordan and Ethan Barcklay finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.

Senior Braden Kappen competed in the long jump for the first time this season and won the event with a leap of 21 feet, 2.25 inches. It’s currently the top mark in 4A and a couple inches away from the school record, which he tied at the Sandpoint Open this past summer.

Luke McCorkle earned second in the long jump and Sam Becker placed first in the pole vault.

In the 200, Peyton Ennis took home second and Keyan Strock was fourth. Keyan also took fifth in the 200.

In the 4x100 and 4x200 relays, Keyan, Kappen, Ennis and McCorkle teamed up to take home a pair of first-place finishes. Both relays are currently ranked third in 4A.

McCorkle, Ennis, Kappen and Ryder Haynes also claimed second in the 4x400 relay.

Brass said the sprint crew really enjoyed Saturday’s meet.

“It gave them a meet to really just have fun as a relay and put it in on the line,” he said.

Senior Marcus Anderson had a standout day in the shot put and discus, notching PRs in both. He earned second in the shot and third in the discus with a throw that bested his previous PR by nearly 20 feet.

Michael Chapman was third in the shot and fifth in the discus. Carson Laybourne placed sixth in the shot and Matthew Chapman took sixth in the discus.

Across boys and girls, 11 throwers posted PRs for Sandpoint on Saturday.

“The throwers did fantastic,” Brass said. “Coach Knowles did a really good job.”

Heading into spring break, Brass feels the Bulldogs are ahead of where they usually are at this time of the year due in part to the warmer weather, which allowed them to get outside much earlier than usual.

The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, April 13 when they host the Sandpoint Inland Empire League meet.
