LEWISTON — Four more Sandpoint track and field athletes were able to punch their tickets to state on the final day of the 4A Region 1 championships on Friday, giving the Bulldogs a total of 23 automatic qualifiers.

The boys won seven events on Friday to grab their first regional title since 2015. They trounced second place Lakeland by 35.5 points.

Across the two days, the boys racked up 13 regional titles.

"One of the things that really impresses me is we don't even have a huge boys team," head coach Matt Brass said.

The girls were unable to fill several events on Friday with their small group of 24 athletes, but they still only finished one point behind second place Lakeland.

"We weren't able to cover all of the events and the girls did really well," Brass said.

As a team, Sandpoint returns home with 18 regional titles. Brass was impressed with how much the team pushed themselves over the course of the two-day meet.

"Honestly, there were a lot of gritty races today," he said. "Every race was competitive, every race was contested and kids were placing higher than they were seeded."

Sophomore Maren Davidson had one of those gritty performances in the girls 800. She edged out Lakeland's Sydnee Hostetler for first by .4 seconds. She also ran a personal record of 2:21.18, just over three seconds off the school record set by her older sister, Hannah, in 2017.

Brass said it was an exciting, nerve-racking race to watch.

"There's a good chance she could go under 2:20 at state the way she is running," he said.

In the girls 1600, Mackenzie Suhy-Gregoire ran a PR to capture second and qualify for state. Destiny Lyons also earned a state berth with a runner-up finish in the 300 hurdles.

Keegan Nelson was the fourth Bulldog to secure a spot to state on Friday. He PR'd in the 1600 to take home second.

Nikolai Braedt added to his regional title trophy case with a win in the 1600. It's his third regional title in the 1600.

Sophomore Rusty Lee swept the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, while Braden Kappen grabbed regional titles in the 100 and 200.

Taylor Petz grabbed another regional title with a PR in the 100 hurdles.

Ben Ricks and Jett Lucas finished first and second respectively in the boys 800. They both PR'd.

Keyan Strock, Luke McCorkle, Peyton Ennis and Lee grabbed first in the 4x200 relay. Ennis, Ricks, Lee and Kappen helped the boys take the title in the 4x400 as well.

Ennis was also second in the 400.

The Bulldogs will have to wait until Sunday to see if they will get any at-large bids to state. The 4A state championships are set for next Friday and Saturday at Eagle High School.

Brass said this year's track team was special. They were extremely unselfish and were willing to swing back and forth between multiple events to help the team score points and succeed. That commitment to each other was reflected in the results at regionals, he said.

"They are a really great, unique group of boys and girls because they enjoy the competition," he said. "Every kid was excited to do every event, contribute to their team, help their teammates out and cheer each other on. I can't say enough good things. They are just a phenomenal young group."
