May 16, 1971 – SIX WILL BE CONFIRMED

Today is confirmation Sunday for a class of First Lutheran Church young people who have completed instruction in the Christian faith. They are Dan Cornagey, Patricia Davis, Matt Kirking, Wanda Dingman, Jody Wahlgren and Janice Rainey.

CLARK FORK HIGH NEWS by Sheryl Best

In its first year with a girls’ track team, Clark Fork accumulated 66 points to win the District 1 Girls’ Track Meet in Coeur d’Alene. Cindy Stevens was first in the 100 meter hurdles and the 50 yard dash. Pam Stender took first place in the 220 and the 100 yard dash. Kathy Craig took first in the long jump. Beth Meredith, Cindy Stevens, Pam Stender, and Kathy Craig made up the first place 440 relay team.

OSPREY PAIR MOVE INTO NEST

The old tub nest used for years by a pair of osprey at the south end of the Sandpoint bridge is now home to a new pair. The nest’s former occupants were shot by some trigger-happy persons four or five years ago. The new pair ignored a new tub that had been erected for their use and chose the old one instead.

GIFT FROM K&K COMMITTEE

Dell “Rear Admiral” Brown of the K&K committee presented new Kamloops scales to George Russell, Alibi skipper, to show the group’s appreciation for his work with the K&K celebration. Russell purchased the Alibi from Hannah Engert, widow of the late and legendary Augie Engert, who ran the barge for many years.

The local lodge of Elks has issued volume 1, number 1, of “The Spirit of 1376,” which will be issued monthly with news for the local lodge.

LARGE CLASS WILL GRADUATE

The largest graduating class in the history of the Sandpoint high school, numbering 38, will receive their diplomas in commencement exercises at the Liberty May 27. The class has 23 girls and 15 boys.

YOUTH TAKEN AS A SLACKER

A young man employed on the Great Northern at Colburn was arrested Tuesday by a government agent, on a charge of failing to register or present himself for registration for service in 1918. The government is making an extended raid all over the country for slackers. This is the first slacker arrest to be made in the county under Uncle Sam’s drag net.

CITY BREVITIES

About 20 cars were tied up on the long wagon bridge for several hours last night. In early evening, a pile driver passed the draw, after which the drawbridge section was not relowered until a traffic backup was caused. Most of the cars were from the south side and were coming into Sandpoint.
