The 1941 graduating class, 40 in number, of the Priest River High School were greeted by a capacity crowd at commencement exercises, held Wednesday, May 28, in the grade school auditorium.

70 Years Ago — 1951

Three escape death at Albeni Dam

Three workmen narrowly escaped death Friday when the piledriver on which they were working plunged into 30 feet of water and a 15-mile-an-hour current of Pend Oreille River. The piledriver was working on the 14th bent of the trestle bridge being built by Donovan-James Construction Co. to convey concrete to spillway construction. The piledriver tower, steam boiler and donkey engine were carried into the river, the men escaping to a stringer on the 13th bent of the trestle.

60 Years Ago — 1961

Firms and high school burglarized

Priest River High School and three business places were burglarized Friday night — West Branch Truck Service, Modern Supply and Bonner Saw Sales. Approximately $171 was taken at West Branch Truck Service and a small amount of cash from the office in the high school. At the high school, entrance was gained by breaking the glass in the door and sliding the inside lock. A bar was used to force the lock at Modern Supply, and a window broken at Bonner Saw Sales. Old-timers meet again

Twenty-eight attended the reunion picnic for old-timers at Freeman Lake last Sunday and reminisced about the good old days and chuckled over well remembered pranks.

40 Years Ago — 1981

Sheriff makes arrest

A Newburg, Ore., man died at a Spokane hospital early Friday morning after he was shot at a cabin on Priest Lake late Thursday night. The victim was identified as Walter L. Sprogis, Jr., 23. A St. Paul, Ore., man Chet Trapp, 29, was arrested by Sheriff Rocky Eveland and was being held in the Bonner County Jail on a charge of murder.

Boys place second

The Spartan boys’ golf team fell short in its bid to repeat as state champs, placing second on the links in the Idaho Class B championship. Gary de Blaquiere won the long-drive competition with a belt of 262 yards

New NAPA opens soon

One of the largest NAPA parts stores in the area will open soon in Priest River. With the retirement of Priest River NAPA owner Arlyn Duncan, the business has been sold to Mike McMillan of Chewelah. McMillan has leased the long vacant Cash & Carry store on Highway 2.
