PONDERAY – Man’s best friend needs a helping paw.

The Better Together Animal Alliance announced this week that the local shelter is nearing full capacity and is waiving adoption fees for dogs over a year old, and cats over six months old. The goal is to open space for new arrivals, help the shelter’s staff, and find forever homes for the pets in their care. In addition, the dog kennels will be open to visitors this weekend.

“Health and housing instabilities are primary reasons for animals being surrendered right now,” said Devin Laundrie, operations director at BTAA. "We need help getting these wonderful pets back into homes.”

This level of capacity has not been seen in years, and according to Laundrie, animals continue to come in.

“While it can be overwhelming to have our animal care center this full, it is a great opportunity to come and find the perfect pet for your family,” Laundrie said.

There are other options available for those who are not in a position to adopt.

Community members can help BTAA by fostering an animal, volunteering as a dog walker or cat room attendant, and sharing animal profiles on social media. Food, supply, and monetary donations are also welcome.

A non-profit organization, BTAA does not receive taxpayer funding and helps approximately 2,400 stray or surrendered animals every year.
