Bullpup girls secure second at districts, boys take sixth

COEUR d'ALENE — The Sandpoint Middle School cross country team capped off another successful season this past Tuesday when they competed in the district meet at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds.

The girls took home second while the boys grabbed sixth out of nine teams on the 1.5-mile course.

On the girls side, the Bullpups finished 30 points behind first-place Coeur d'Alene Charter, who had five runners in the top 10.

"Our depth really showed because they did not split the races into JV and varsity," coach Jake Peterson said. "The SMS girls secured nine of the top 30 spots in the district."

Six runners finished in the top 17 for the Bullpups: Izzy Waters fifth, Elizabeth Storms ninth, Mackenzie Mitchell 11th, Hannah Stiller 12th, Jordyn Tomco 16th and Silvi Landrum 17th.

"Waters and Storms have been our two constant scorers and led the way with their best races of the season," Peterson said. "They both beat runners from other schools who had run faster than them in previous meets."

Bailey Majors took 24th, Addison Oliver 28th and Siena Todd-Murray 30th out of 122 runners. All 19 girls posted personal records.

Roman Coscarelli, an eighth grader, secured sixth in the boys race and Jeru Gidley brought home 15th. They both bested their PRs by over 20 seconds.

As a team, the Bullpups finished 18 points behind fifth-place Lakeland and 68 ahead of seventh-place River City.

Dawson Wood earned 35th, Seth Grillo 51st, Evan Brubaker 52nd, Jakeb Addison 56th, Anthony Tallent 57th, Sam Brown 66th and Tryson Mounts 73rd out of 156.

"Dawson [Wood] has a lot of potential and should be a nice addition to the high school team next year," Peterson said.

A special moment took place at the end of the boys race, Peterson said. The Bullpups' last runner was struggling as he neared the finish line and the whole team ran out to cheer him on and bring him in. Peterson said the team did it all on their own and the moment brought him to tears.

"They have a true understanding of competition and appreciation of others, a skill that will serve them well in life," he said.
