Spartans rocked by Badgers in Homecoming loss

PRIEST RIVER — Friday's Homecoming game against Bonners Ferry didn't go as planned.

Priest River football just couldn't find a way to keep with the Badgers, falling 41-0 in Intermountain League action.

The Spartans only managed 16 total yards on 30 offensive plays and three turnovers proved to be costly.

"While we didn't get the scoreboard outcome we wanted, the kids played hard against a very good Badger team," head coach Jared Hughes said.

Despite the lopsided score, Hughes felt like his defense played solid overall, they just allowed too many big plays. Matyus McLain and Kameron Salesky led the Spartan defense with 12 and 11 tackles respectively. Landon Reynolds added eight tackles, and Luke Slater recorded the only sack for Priest River.

The Spartans were without starting quarterback Michael Johnson for the second straight game, and Hayden Sorbel and Salesky split time under center.

The Spartans were decked out in camouflage uniforms sponsored by the Idaho National Guard and was it also Senior Night.

"The seniors we have are outstanding young men and will be missed after the season is done," Hughes said.

McLain racked up 76 yards on a pair of kickoff returns. Hughes thought his team did a good job cleaning up the penalties.

Priest River (0-6) heads to Kellogg at 7 p.m. for its final game of the season.
