McLain scores twice in season finale loss to Kellogg

KELLOGG — Spartan football wrapped up its season last Friday night at Intermountain League foe Kellogg.

Junior Riply Luna tossed eight touchdown passes as the Wildcats rolled to a 50-16 win over Priest River.

The Spartans outscored Kellogg in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with the Wildcats’ potent offensive attack.

“We did a good job controlling the running game and their No. 1 receiver,” head coach Jared Hughes said, “but their No. 2, 3 and 4 receivers stepped up for them.”

Matyus McLain had a monster game for the Spartans. The junior caught a pair of touchdown passes over 40 yards, recorded four sacks, led the team with 14 total tackles and recovered a fumble. He was a menace all night, and also racked up 50 yards on three kick returns.

Senior quarterback Michael Johnson returned to the lineup for the Spartans and went 4 of 11 for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Kameron Salesky toted the rock 26 times for 75 yards and on defense tallied 12 total tackles and a sack.

Junior Deegan Goins, senior Luke Slater and sophomore Landon Reynolds all had a sack, and seniors Levi Bowen and Brady O’Brien both forced a fumble.

Hughes thought the Spartans did a great job making adjustments at halftime, holding Kellogg to just one score in the final 24 minutes.

“Offensively, this was our best game since our Manson game four weeks ago,” Hughes said.

The Spartans were unable to break through for a win on the gridiron for the third straight year. However, MaxPreps ruled the canceled home game with Orofino was a forfeit by the Maniacs, so Priest River finishes with a 1-7 record.
