Local option tax is good for Sandpoint

Recently the Carousel of Smiles was referenced in an opinion piece about the local option tax.

I want to clearly state that the carousel is not seeking any money from the LOT, or from any other city generated tax funds. The Carousel Project is a 501(c)3, and we will accomplish our goals with donations and grants without the use of Sandpoint city tax funds.

During the Parks Master Planning process, there were abundant opportunities to learn and input ideas for our parks which are now reflected in the final conceptual plans. For the carousel, two locations were identified, and after further analysis and community feedback, our board determined the Farmin’s Landing site to be a more appropriate location that will better serve the objectives of our project and its ability to support the activities of the city, businesses and our community. However, the location is not a “done deal” as was recently mis-stated in a letter. There will be public presentations on our vision, and there will be public hearings prior to the city council making any decisions regarding the location of the carousel on city-owned land.

The proposed LOT is a very palatable 1% increase on sales tax, with 85% coming from non-city residents, providing the ability to move many aspects of the parks plan from conceptual ideas to reality. Having yearly funds in hand will also enable the city to use leverage and apply for state, federal and foundation grants that require matching funds to be in place.

Voting no will not free up funds for any other purpose, but will ensure that improvements that are made to our sidewalks and parks will take longer, with the cost fully borne by Sandpoint taxpayers.

The LOT is good for Sandpoint.
