POST FALLS — The Priest River cross country team opened its season last Thursday with the Post Falls River Run at Q'emlin Park.

The course was only 1.8 miles long, allowing the Spartans to ease into the season.

Four separate races were held on the boys side based on class — freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. There was a freshman/sophomore and junior/senior race for the girls.

The top five runners in each race received medals and no team scores were kept.

Dylan Lord led the way, placing fifth in the junior race. Ethan Korff finished 13th in the same race.

Dalton Brown, Brayden Lamanna and Tanner Bowers all competed in the freshman race. Brown was 14th, Lamanna 16th and Bowers 23rd out of 38 runners.

Erika Swoboda was the only girl that hit the course for the Spartans. She took 32nd in the junior/senior race.

Thirteen schools participated in the meet.

"It went really well for having so many new runners," head coach Lance Clark said. "I was really happy with the performance."

Priest River will compete in its first 5K of the fall when they head to the Timberlake Farragut Invitational on Saturday.
