PULLMAN — The Conditions were less than ideal for the Sandpoint boys golf team as they competed at the Palouse Ridge Golf Course on Thursday.

The Bulldogs finished in 11 place.

“It wasn’t great conditions for golf,” Sandpoint golf coach Mike Deprez said. “We were looking at 30 mile per hour winds and that’ll always give you a challenge.”

In the fifth spot today for the Bulldogs was Arie VanDenBerg. He finished with a score of 100.

“That was the best he’s looked so far,” Deprez said. “He had a tiny bit of a problem with his shot, but he’ll be able to fix it.”

One of the consistent pieces for the Bulldogs, Jacob Gove, shot a 99.

“I’m not worried about it,” Deprez said. “That’s just how it goes with a lot of wind.”

Joey Aexel shot a season-low 80 at the Palouse Ridge Golf Course to lead the Bulldogs.

“Last year he was just hanging out with the boys. Now he’s invested,” Deprez said. “This was Joey’s pay day where he got his return on his investment.”

Jake Samuels also shot just below 90, coming in with a score of 89. Merek Bauck scored an even 90.

Deprez is really looking forward to what the core four of Samuels, Gove, Aexel, and Bauck can do as the season progresses.

“I’ve seen four players put a tremendous amount of time, work and dedication into the sport of golf,” Deprez said. “We just need to work on our decision making. There were a couple of shots they could’ve stayed in the moment. But we’re going to fix that. It’ll be fun at districts.”

Sandpoint will be in Pullman next Wednesday at the Highlands for its next competition.
