COEUR d'ALENE — A Sagle man was arrested Wednesday evening following a standoff with law enforcement in Hayden.

Kootenai County sheriff’s deputies arrested the suspect, Duke Huckabee, 49, at a residence in the 8900 block of Neufeld Road.

Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris told The Press the incident began around 4:30 p.m. when a female called and reported the suspect was threatening to kill her.

Deputies responded to the location, Norris said, and ordered the suspect to exit the location, which he refused.

“The deputies determined that a crime did occur and initiated the activation of our sheriff’s SWAT team,” Norris said.

Deputies discovered an aggravated assault occurred inside the residence and Huckabee had arrest warrants out of Bonner County for aggravated assault and second-degree kidnapping. Deputies also learned there was an active no contact order with the victim.

SWAT team members attempted to negotiate

with the Huckabee for approximately an hour before they deployed a robot into the residence, through an open window, and located Huckabee inside.

Huckabee then surrendered and exited the home. Huckabee was arrested without incident.

Huckabee was booked into the Kootenai County jail for his warrants along with new charges to include two counts of aggravated assault, kidnapping, and battery. This is Huckabee’s ninth time being booked into the Kootenai County Public Safety Building.

“The deployment of our SWAT vehicle in 2022 surpasses anything we’ve seen so far,” Norris said. “We live in a growing community and these types of situations are increasing.”

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted, and roads were blocked near Neufeld Road, which is off Honeysuckle west of Walmart.

The sheriff said the information he provided is preliminary and subject to change as an investigation progresses.
