REACTIONS CONCERNING SCHOOL VARY

When “school” is mentioned, there’s no better place to acquire opinions than from students. Little Wanda Jones, who will enroll in first grade at Lincoln School, assumes school will be fun. “I want to learn to slide and swing and that stuff,” she said. Pat Perry, who will be a fifth grader at New Farmin, said “I want to go to school because there’s nothing else to do. I like the races and playing basketball and football the most.” Francie Ruyle, who shrieked at the sound of the word “school,” admits she looks forward to being a Farmin sixth grader because “we get to go to lunch before the fifth graders.” Being picked on by eighth graders is what Tim Sass isn’t looking forward to when he enters his first year at Sandpoint Junior High. “I get bored just swimming all summer, so I like school,” he said. Julie McCormick is excited about going to football games as a high school sophomore. “I think I will really like high school,” she said, “because we won’t be treated like little kids.” After a year of high school, Lorlene Baker is still sold on the idea. She enjoys new ideas and concepts. Kathy Cochran thinks of her last year as “getting out of school.” “It will be sad to leave all your friends. I’m sure it will be shorter than most,” she said.

Aug. 16, 1922 – BOTTLE BAY FIRE

Last week the largest and most real forest fire experienced hereabouts for years raged on the mountains overlooking Bottle bay. The fire had its origin several weeks ago, adjacent to the Northern Pacific track at the south end of the railroad bridge. Occasional winds gradually drove the fire up the canyon eastward. On Wednesday the fire had reached the ridge and Wednesday night’s wind drove it eastward several miles, and started it down toward the main lake. Thursday night, renewed winds roused the fire to a fury, and it raced down the hillside with all the ferocity of a hurricane, not stopping until it reached the shores of the bay. All told, the fire burned over 2000 acres. Most of the territory was cut-over lands.

BUNGALOW-PACK RIVER VALLEY NEWS

A much-needed rain fell the latter part of last week.

The new addition to our school house is nearing completion. A new coat of paint adorns our teachers’ cottage and with a larger, well-fenced and cleared school yard, we will all be very proud.

Culver-Lane (lumber camp) has been doing some much needed improvement on the road leading to Culvers Spur. We hope our commissioners will take a “tip” and get busy and do likewise on the transcontinental road from Sandpoint to Culver Spur. If they are asleep, a trip over that road will awaken them.
