Aug. 21, 1922 – MILL WIPED OUT BY FIRE!

Fire, starting in the planing shed of the A.C. White Lumber plant at Laclede Thursday night, in a few hours wiped out all units of the plant and entirely destroyed both the main yards, with 17,000,000 feet of the finest grade manufactured western white pine, and the lath yards. Also destroyed were the home of W.J. Hodge, the company house occupied by Thomas Vandervort, the boarding house and the bunkhouse. The company store was saved after hours of Herculean effort. The loss totals about $700,000, the worst single conflagration in Bonner county history.

CITY BREVITIES

The forest fire which last week went over the top of the mountain south of Contest point and destroyed considerable property at the Sam Smart ranch also burned out five or six bridges and culverts on the new Bottle Bay road, which is now under construction. The loss to the county and district will be about $1000.

Sandpoint saw its first tourist radio outfit yesterday when two women of Chicago paused at a local filling station to replenish their gas and oil and change a tire while on a cross country trip to Oakland, Cal. Across the top of their Auburn Beauty-Six touring car, from poles rigged to the hood and rear, was a three-wire radio aerial connected to a Tresco two-stage amplifier in the tonneau. “We were told we carried the first radio set in Yellowstone park,” said one of the ladies.
