100 Years Ago — 1922
Beardmore store opening
The opening of the Charles W. Beardmore store in the new Beardmore Block will be held Tuesday, Dec. 19, 1922. The stock will consist of everything for man, woman and child. Staple and fancy groceries, standard brands of underwear, shoes, rubbers, ladies’ ready to wear garments, men’s and boys’ clothing, cigars, tobacco, cigarettes, candies, baked goods, etc. A souvenir will be presented to every visitor to the store on the opening date.

Slough fine skating
Young and old are now enjoying the fine skating at Keyser’s Slough. It is entirely frozen over, the ice being several inches thick. Parents can feel safe in allowing their children to go to the slough. The river is reported to be frozen over at Thama Ferry.
80 Years Ago — 1942
Members of the Congregational church choir were entertained at dinner by Mrs. Lyon. The following were present: Mrs. Nick Badraun, Mrs. Ellen Blair, Mrs. Martin Brudie, Billie Campbell, Mrs. Charles Campbell, Phyllis Campbell, Mrs. Robert Doolittle, Louise Peterson and Mrs. Lee Frakes.

P.O. River flowing natural
All of the storage in Pend Oreille Lake provided by the Corps of Engineers Albeni Falls Dam has been released in order to assist in maintaining a high power generation at Grand Coulee and Bonneville Dams on the Columbia. This year promises to be one of the driest on record.
60 Years Ago — 1962
Wards buy business
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Ward have purchased the Newport Electric and Laundry-Mat, which will be known as Selkirk Electric in the future. They hope to have a nice display of appliances soon.
50 Years Ago — 1972
Closure set for mill
Operation of the stud mill, part of the Diamond International complex at Albeni Falls, will come to an end this month, according to plant manager, John L. Airlport. The stud mill, which was built in 1955, will be phased out and the 28 men employed there will be absorbed into the new sawmill now under construction.
40 Years Ago — 1982
Coolin Hotel burns
The Coolin Hotel was destroyed by fire Dec. 14. The frame building made a very hot fire, and the firefighters had a difficult time saving the Leonard Paul Building and the one owned by Art Moore. The hotel building was owned by Mr. and Mrs. William Hodge.

Chamber cuts ribbon
About 60 people attended the long-awaited ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Priest River Industrial Park on Dec.10. Officials from the chamber of commerce and Advanced Input Devices took part.

Chamber wants a lighting tour
This year, the Priest River Chamber of Commerce would like to publish a Christmas lighting tour instead of a lighting contest. Anyone interested can call Jen Allbee at the chamber office or the Priest River Times and give them your name and address. Then, like for May Day, the Times will print a map in the newspaper.
