Parks & Rec sets January programs

A number of programs are on tap next month through Sandpoint Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces.

Open gym basketball for adults and youth: Open gym is held on Sundays at the Sandpoint High School, 410 S. Division, with the program continuing through March 12. There will be no open gym on Dec. 25, Jan. 1, and Feb. 12). Adults play 4:30-6 p.m. and pay a $2/player fee at the door. Youth (grades 3-12) play 3-4:30 p.m. for free.

Online registration is open for a number of programs.

Little Dribblers Basketball (grades 1 & 2) is a clinic-style program is designed to introduce youth to basketball, and teach the basics of the game with an emphasis on dribbling and ball handling. Play is on Wednesdays from Feb. 8 - March 29, at Kootenai Elementary from 2:30-4 p.m. (first grade) and 4-5:30 p.m. (second grade).

The registration deadline is Jan. 16. The cost is $34.50 ($5.25 non-resident fee). Scholarships and sibling discounts are available for all youth league sports; inquire at 208-263-3613 prior to online registration.

Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, volunteers are needed for this program. Sign up to volunteer during online registration. No special basketball background is needed.

Youth Basketball (grades 3-6) is a program with a focus on fun and fundamentals. Play split into third- and fourth-grade girls, third- and fourth-grade boys, fifth- and sixth-grade girls, and fifth- and sixth-grade boys.

Games are held on Saturdays at Sandpoint Middle School.  Play will begin Feb. 4 and run through March 11. There will be a coach’s meeting before play begins. All coaches will be contacted. Adult volunteer coaches are needed for this program. Sign up during program registration. Parks and Rec has resources to share coaching techniques, skills, and drills upon request.

Youth Sports Jersey — A red/white nylon mesh reversible sports jersey will be required for both the Youth Basketball and Little Dribblers program. They may be purchased online or at the Parks & Recreation Department if you do not already have one.  We also allow red-and-white reversible jerseys from other organizations to be used in our leagues. Jerseys cost $14.50. 

Community Garden Plots. Last year’s plot tenants in good standing receive first right of refusal on their plot for the upcoming 2023 season. Online reservation opens for remaining Community Garden Plots on Jan. 10. The community garden located at U.S. 2 and Lake Street offers both 4-foot by 8-foot plots for $26 and 7-foot by 7-foot plots for $31.50. Supply is extremely limited.
