SANDPOINT — Dangerous, below-zero wind chills are possible today, according to an advisory from the National Weather Service.

A wind chill watch is in effect from late Tuesday through late Thursday, affecting portions of North Idaho, including Athol, Bonners Ferry, Coeur d’Alene, Hayden, Post Falls, Sandpoint and Worley. The Spokane area will also be affected.

Frigid arctic air will come from the north, bringing wind chills as low as 35 below.

“These temperatures are brutal on the body,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Charlotte Dewey.

Authorities advise keeping pets indoors as much as possible. Check frequently on older family, friends and neighbors.

Dress warmly and plan carefully if traveling a long distance or spending any length of time outside.

Make sure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside.

The icy winds are expected to move south and east later this week.
